In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, directing the King Center and the Corporation for National and Community Service to carry out a day of service reflecting Dr. King's life and teachings.

Governor Chet Culver said, "Dr. King's legacy represents hope and reminds us that we all play a role in making not only Iowa, but the world, a better place.  Dr. King set an example through his words and actions.  Lt. Governor Judge and I remain committed to making Iowa a state that embraces diversity, celebrates differences, and is a place where all people can achieve the American dream."

"This is a great opportunity for our members to reach out and help others in our community," April Enderton, president of the Des Moines chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, said.

Iowa has a strong tradition of service and consistently ranks in the top ten states in volunteer rates.  Martin Luther King Day of Service provides the recognition and exposure to keep Iowa a leader in community service and volunteerism.
